The cost of celecoxib, a medicine used to treat pain and inflammation, is typically around $15-20 per dose.
But AstraZeneca, the world’s largest drug maker, may soon face competition from generic drugmakers in the form of generic versions of the drug.
The generic versions of Celebrex, manufactured by Merck & Co., are called “Celebrex.” They are priced at about $1,000 to $1,200 for a 30-day supply, according to the drug’s official global trade register, including some of the medicines used to treat pain and inflammation.
The list price of the generic version of Celebrex is between $0.22 and $0.38 per 30-day supply, according to the trade register. Generic versions of the pain reliever, ibuprofen, are priced at about $0.50 to $0.59 per 30-day supply.
The Celebrex-ibuprofen is sold as an OTC pain reliever, along with other pain relievers such as acetaminophen, codeine, naproxen, ibuprofen, and diclofenac, and anti-inflammatory drugs, such as celecoxib. The Celebrex-ibuprofen is sold as an OTC anti-inflammator, including Celebrex and ibuprofen.

If generic celecoxib isn’t available, Merck & Co. says it could lose market share to generics from the generic version.
“This is just the beginning of the end of what we will see,” Dr. Andrew Goldstein, a dermatologist at the University of Virginia School of Dental Medicine, told NBC News in an exclusive interview. “This will not be over in the future.”
Goldstein is an analyst with Morningstar Partners in London. He said that while Merck has been trying to block generic drugmakers from selling the drug, it could also be the first time generic drugmakers are trying to sell a generic version of the drug.
Goldstein said the generics are much cheaper than brand-name drugs, which have to meet the same standards as the brand-name drugs.
“As long as they’re in the same dosage as the brand-name drugs, the generics are the same,” he said. “A lot of the time, that’s a good thing.”
But that competition could be huge. The market for prescription pain relievers is estimated to reach $1.9 billion this year, or about 0.7 percent of the global economy.
“There’s probably a market for celecoxib in that price range,” said Goldstein, who has researched the drug for over 20 years.
Some people have reported experiencing side effects from taking Celebrex, and even some people have reported hearing aches, headaches, and other adverse reactions. It’s also important to note that the side effects of Celebrex are usually mild, and there’s a risk of serious allergic reactions.

“I always wanted to see what the FDA would approve with Celebrex,” said Goldstein, who has studied Celebrex. “I’d like to see more celecoxib in the same dosage amount.”
Goldstein, who also has a dermatology interest, said the generic celecoxib is a different kind of medicine.
“I don’t think that’s the real question,” he said. “But it is.”
The U. S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval of Celebrex for use in the United States was based on safety concerns, and the drug’s manufacturer, Merck, has said it has not changed the dosage because of safety concerns.
